Healthy Chocolate? Try our raw chocolate recipe!

It's hard to find someone who doesn't like chocolate but many people avoid it because they think it's not healthy. Whilst there are a lot of sugary and unhealthy chocolates out there we are not limited to these. Many health experts recommend having a little dark chocolate but have you ever tried raw chocolate? We love raw chocolate as it has lots of beneficial nutrients whilst tasting absolutely divine!

Chocolate is rich in antioxidants like polyphenols and flavonoids. These may help with inflammation, improve your brain function and boost your immune system. Chocolate may also lower blood pressure and improve cardiovascular health. Plus it contains other beneficial nutrients like potassium, phosphorus, zinc, and selenium.

Cacao does contain an alkaloid called theobromine which is in the same class of stimulants as caffeine but this has a different effect to caffeine which is more prolonged, giving a more balanced energy boost.

There are lots of recipes out there but we are sharing our favourite, simple, tried-and-tested recipe which allows you to add a few drops of CBD oil too to make it extra special!

Extra Special Raw Chocolate Recipe

  • 50 grams cacao butter (you can also add a little coconut oil but not too much as it will make the chocolate melt in your hand more quickly)
  • 3 tablespoons of date or yacon syrup (maple syrup is also great but is not technically raw)
  • 40 grams cacao powder
  • 1 vanilla pod (slice and scrape out the middle to use) or 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • A pinch of sea salt
  • Optional: freeze dried fruit like mulberries and raspberries or try adding ginger or cinnamon. We also like to add fresh raspberries and fresh ginger if it's going to be eaten straight away.
  • Optional: we recommend 40 drops of your favourite Alchemist of Eden CBD oil (remember to work out how much chocolate you can eat in one go without having too much CBD and adjust as necessary - dosing guidelines can be found on the packaging or see our FAQs)

Directions

  1. Make a double boiler by placing a glass bowl into a saucepan of water and gently heat. Add the cacao butter (and coconut oil if you are using it) ensuring that you don’t get any water in the bowl.
  2. Once melted take off the heat and stir in all the other ingredients, making sure that they are well blended. You may want to use the additions as a topping for decoration rather than include in the mixture, it’s up to you!
  3. Pour into a chocolate mold or even onto a plate on some parchment paper and let it cool before placing it into the fridge or freezer to harden. You can store in the freezer for up to a month but you'll probably eat it before then!

We hope you enjoy this recipe! You can play about with it to adapt it to your taste. You can’t really go too far wrong! Do let us know what you used and how it turned out!
